Subject: Hatch Act Revisions
Description: Ford (D-MI) motion to suspend the rules and vote on a bill to overhaul the 1939 Hatch Act which bars federal employees from engaging in political activities. Under the new law, federal employees (even including IRS agents) would be able to campaign, raise funds and run for partisan elected office. A two-thirds majority of those present and voting (281 in this case) was required for passage under suspension of the rules.
