  • On December 22, 1944, 23-year-old Charles Woods (his active duty was Major) was taking off from Northeast India for China over the Himalayan Mountains. His four engine bomber loaded with gasoline crashed and exploded in a ball of fire. Charles was the sole survivor. With third degree burns to the face and hands, he spent the next five years in military hospitals undergoing over sixty plastic surgery operations.
